Emerge Beirut

Open-source, interactive, user-generated mapping of the emergency response and sustainable development efforts of Beirut and Lebanon

By the people for the people. Beirut, 2020

Open-source, interactive and user-generated mapping of Beirut’s ecosystem of change.

Emerge was created by a team of passionate citizens to help coordinate the emergency responses and development efforts taking place in Beirut after the 4th of August blast.

Through cross-sector mapping and data-visualization, the platform aims to promote, ripple and scale game-changing solutions by means of interconnectivity. Its real-time mapping of problems and solutions aims to foster collaboration, transparency and traceability in a rapidly changing environment.

A pilot project that serves as a free visual database that is available for all, and that allows to track, quantify and incentivize the social and environmental impact of the collective actions.

Emerge marries diverse bottom-up approaches with informed top-down analytical readings in order to connect the micro to the macro to encourage participatory planning and data-informed policy change.

The platform is coded using Javascript, jQuery, Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, Firebase, and QGIS - among others - and is in constant state of development.

Emerge Beirut is a citizen-based non-profit project currently managed, designed, coded and curated independently on volunteering basis.
